Belmont Stakes and Steaks Party

The Belmont Stakes is the final race in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The Belmont is actually older than the Kentucky Derby by six years, but not as well known as the Derby.

The race is run five weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Belmont Park on Long Island, New York.  When researching traditions for this race, it was hard to find much even after hours of research.

One of our customers ordered invitations and we loved her theme of  "Belmont Stakes and Steaks Party." As the race is held on a Saturday between June 5th and 11th, it's a perfect opportunity to grill steaks and enjoy a great excuse to party with friends.

Her menu consisted of New York fare:
  • Belmont Breeze Cocktails
  • New York Beers
  • Shrimp Cocktail
  • Grilled Steaks
  • Baked Pototoes
  • Grilled Asparagus
  • New York Cheesecake

As for Belmont fashion, while you won't see as many hats as at the Derby, if you are lucky enough to get tickets to the Belmont and want to get noticed and possibly have your picture in the paper (my picture was in the paper the day after the Kentucky Derby!), a fabulous hat is a must-have accessory. Unlike the Derby, hats for the Belmont Stakes tend to be sleek and clean and can run from around $70 to thousands of dollars.
Please comment and let us know your Belmont Stakes traditions and what food you're serving at your Belmont Stakes party.

For dessert, blueberries, strawberries and whipped cream can be added to cakes, cupcakes, or layer in dessert cups to keep with a patriotic theme.  Apple pie or Cherry Crisp are favorites that can be served with a scoop of ice cream.  Be sure to have enough ice on hand to stock your coolers and add to your drinks.
  • Set-Up:  Make sure you have enough seating, shade, sunscreen and sweaters for when the sun goes down. For extra seating, set out blankets or rugs on the grass in the shade. Insect repellent, trash bags and plenty of water to stay hydrated will also make the day more pleasant.

Who Do You Invite to a Graduation Party?

3/5/2013

Who do you invite to a Graduation Party? | TheInvitationShop.com
Every graduate will have a list of “must invite” people and that's a good place to start when planning your graduation party guest list.

How do you decide on who to invite?  Make a list of:
  • your child's school friends
  • girlfriend / boyfriend
  • grandparents
  • aunts, uncles, cousins
  • extended family
  • church friends
  • sports friends
  • club friends
  • job friends
  • teachers
  • coaches
  • neighbors
  • review your holiday card list to see if you missed anyone

Once you have your guest list started, the most important thing you must do is pick a date for your party. While this may seem easy, consider the end of school will be filled with other friend's graduation parties, weddings, and summer vacations, so the earlier you can decide on a date, the better.

Graduation Announcements and Graduation Party Invitations from TheInvitationShop.com
A crucial aspect of picking a date is to make sure the most important people in your child's life, grandparents, best friends, and other relatives, have the date open. Make sure everyone has the day off work, including the graduate, your spouse and your graduates significant other! Make sure best friends' parents don't schedule their party the same time as yours as everyone will be disappointed, your party mood and turnout and will suffer or may even be cut short to accommodate other events.

You may want to consider mailing Save the Date Cards eight weeks or more in advance of your party so guests can mark their calendars. Parents that also have a child graduating will appreciate the heads up to avoid scheduling their party at the same time and making graduates and friends choose which party to attend. If you have people that won't come to the party because it's too hard for them to travel, consider sending graduation announcements to them instead of an invitation to a party.

Your graduate will be talking about graduation on social media and at school, so be sure to include your child in all areas of party planning so your party will go smoothly and they will not miss out on important events or friends' parties they might not have told you about yet.

Remember, your graduate is going to be busy with their friends at their graduation parties and you will probably be invited to several of them too, so be sure to leave time in your schedule to relax and celebrate this milestone in your child's life.

Do You Include Mom in Baby Shower Planning?

2/18/2013

Do You Include Mom in Baby Shower Planning?
The simple answer is YES! Why not include the mother-to-be in the baby shower planning?

This is a very special time for her and unless the party is a surprise, it could be a very wise decision to ask the mom her preferences on:
  • colors
  • time of day
  • indoor or outdoor
  • a casual party or a formal china and silver all-out-affair
  • girls only or couples shower

Asking her preferences on a few things doesn't mean she has to be involved in ALL the planning. You do not have to give up control and bow to her every whim, it just means you are being nice and want her input on a few ideas you have.  The end result is you want her to be happy with you and pleased with the outcome of the shower you gave hosted for her.
