Belmont Stakes and Steaks Party

The Belmont Stakes is the final race in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The Belmont is actually older than the Kentucky Derby by six years, but not as well known as the Derby.

The race is run five weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Belmont Park on Long Island, New York.  When researching traditions for this race, it was hard to find much even after hours of research.

One of our customers ordered invitations and we loved her theme of  "Belmont Stakes and Steaks Party." As the race is held on a Saturday between June 5th and 11th, it's a perfect opportunity to grill steaks and enjoy a great excuse to party with friends.

Her menu consisted of New York fare:
  • Belmont Breeze Cocktails
  • New York Beers
  • Shrimp Cocktail
  • Grilled Steaks
  • Baked Pototoes
  • Grilled Asparagus
  • New York Cheesecake

As for Belmont fashion, while you won't see as many hats as at the Derby, if you are lucky enough to get tickets to the Belmont and want to get noticed and possibly have your picture in the paper (my picture was in the paper the day after the Kentucky Derby!), a fabulous hat is a must-have accessory. Unlike the Derby, hats for the Belmont Stakes tend to be sleek and clean and can run from around $70 to thousands of dollars.
Please comment and let us know your Belmont Stakes traditions and what food you're serving at your Belmont Stakes party.

Non-Alcoholic Mint Julep Recipe

Non-Alcoholic Mint Julep Recipe from TheInvitationShop.com
A non-alcoholic Mint Julep is perfect for any Kentucky Derby Party, especially if your party will have children or teens in attendance.

Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 6 mint springs (at least)
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 5 cups crushed ice
  • 2-1/2 cups chilled ginger ale
  • Lemon slices for garnish if you wish

Mix sugar, cold water, lemon juice and at least six mint sprigs in a bowl and let stand for 45 minutes for flavors to meld. Strain the mixture and remove mint. Tip: Because this mixture takes 45 minutes to meld the flavors, be sure to make more than enough at one time to serve all your guests.

Using two 2 quart pitchers place half of the above mixture and half of the ginger ale in each pitcher. Top with lemon slices and additional mint sprigs in the pitchers or use for each glass.

The one thing you need for mint juleps? Lots and lots of crushed ice, so be sure to stock up!

This recipe makes approximately 3 quarts Non-Alcoholic Mint Juleps (about 12 - 8 ounce cups). Be sure to make enough at once to eliminate prep time after your guests have arrived.

Worst Wedding Mistakes: Inviting Too Many Guests

Worst Wedding Mistakes: Inviting Too Many Guests
You want your wedding day to be perfect and coming up with a guest list is one of the most important things to consider when arriving and sticking to a budget.

As most aspects of our wedding are based on "per person", an accurate head count of who's invited and who's coming is crucial.

Your guest list is where everything begins and ends. You need to know how many people you are inviting and how many are realistically going to attend.  This number dictates the size of your wedding location and the reception venue, your budget for food, drinks, favors, etc.

Mailing out 300 hundred invitations and hoping only 150 guests will accept is not realistic.

If your chapel or beautiful section of beach will only hold 150 people and 200 reply that they are attending, you will have a serious problem. Turning away invited guests is a situation you will want to avoid. Also, there may not be room to simply add more chairs or more tables to the venues you have chosen. There are space limitations and also fire laws that will limit the number of people allowed at one time in a location.

Set your wedding budget and know how many "heads" you have allowed in this number. To narrow down your list of who to invite, assume 80% will reply they are attending unless you are having a destination wedding and the location will prevent many guests from attending due to cost or travel distances.

Going forward, the number of guests to invite assumes 80% will attend.  Calculate how many guests you can safely invite to order your save the date cards, wedding invitations, and your temporary head count when determining costs for your wedding cake, reception venue, caterer, bartender, party favors or any service that relies on per-person price to arrive at an estimated cost of all services and to plan your wedding budget.

Baby Shower Thank You Notes

5/19/2015

Baby shower note cards are a great baby shower gift. If you're hosting the shower, it's fun to buy note cards that match or coordinate with the shower party invitations.
Baby Note Cards and Thank You Notes
By purchasing note cards at the same time as the invitations, you can have the notes ready for the mom-to-be right after the shower.

To make things even easier for the expectant mother, have each guest address an envelope to themselves so that step is already done. At the end of the shower, give the mom the note cards, the self-addressed envelopes and the list of gifts received and who gave them.  This gesture might end up being the favorite gift of the shower.
